Folk Music and Poetry from Kutch – 22nd June, 2019

On the occasion of World Music Day

Kala Varso will be in Mumbai this year on the occasion of World Music Day bringing to you various Folk Songs and Folk Tunes from Kutch. The even will be held at Santabai Hall, Shree Amulakh Amichand International School, Gujarati Kelavani Mandal, 76-A, Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Road, Matunga (C.R.), Mumbai.

For the evening, the Folk Musicians will sing and celebrate various Folk music forms like Sufi, Aaradhiwani, Lok Geet etc., accompanied by a wide range of traditional Kutch Folk Music instruments like Santar, Chang, Jodia Pawa, Ravanhato, Dak, Morli, Ghado Ghambelo, Dholak, Dhol, Tabla, Naubat, Bhenjo, Harmonium, Manjira, Jaanj, Kartal and Kanjari.

Kala Varso has been organising Folk Music programs on the World Music Day for the last 5 years. The concept of the World Music Day is ” all concerts must be free to the public, and all performers donate their time for free”. Five years ago when we first discussed this idea with the Kutch Folk Musicians they felt very enthusiastic about the idea – this is how the music scene used to be some decades ago before it became transactional based.

That’s also been the concept of Traditional Reyan (the knowledge and Folk Music sharing platforms in Kutch) which we have been trying to revive the last seven years – to create an environment where the villagers come and enjoy the spirit of the music – not just the musical aspect but the coming together of all the communities, sharing interesting stories, the tea breaks in between etc.

We will also use the occasion to launch a short documentary on Kutch Folk Music. The documentary will introduce a viewer to the various genres and sounds from Kutch Folk Music scene, and the work we do in the areas of Kutch Folk Music.

**(The event will be held on June 22nd instead of on June 21st, due to logistic reasons.)
